Department of Pharmacology and Biochemistry

The Department of Pharmacology and Biochemistry offers a number of obligatory and elective courses at undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate study programmes at the Faculty. Pharmacology, as one of the obligatory courses, teaches about the effects of medications and toxins on biological systems, their interaction and side-effects, which is defined in the learning outcomes and modified to each level of education. In the Biochemistry course, knowledge and skills within the scope of general biochemistry, clinical biochemistry and laboratory medicine are acquired.

Aside from teaching, members of the Department of Pharmacology and Biochemistry in cooperation with national and international research groups also actively conduct several scientific research projects in the Laboratory for Translational Medicine. The projects conduct research on hepatotoxicity of medications, gastroprotective effects of herbal medicines and the mechanisms of renoprotective effects of antihyperglycemics. As a part of this cooperation, members of the department get the opportunity to develop their scientific skills and to work in various national and internationallaboratories.

Members of the Department, aside from teaching and research activities, also perform duties for the Croatian Society for Precise (Personalized) Medicine and International Society for Applied Biological Sciences. In addition to that, they are active members of the Croatian Pharmacology Society and they support scientific activities organized by the abovementioned societies, they participate in the organisation of international congresses - International Monothematic Conference on Viral Hepatitis C (IMC-HCV) and ISABS Conference on Forensic, Anthropologic and Medical Genetics and Mayo Clinic Lectures in Translational Medicine. Members of the Department are active in publishing and they are members of editorial boards in several international scientific magazines, and they have been awarded for their scientific work numerous times.

The Department is especially proud of the students who regularly gather in the Laboratory for Translational Medicine where they conduct research as a part of their final paper, graduationthesis or doctoral dissertation. Furthermore, they actively participate in the implementation of various activities aimed at the popularisation of science.
