Department of Surgery and Anaesthesiology and Reanimatology

The Department of Surgery and Anaesthesiology and Reanimatology connects basic sciences with clinical research and provides high-quality clinical training, organises and conducts a number of compulsory and elective courses in undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate study programmes of the Faculty. It promotes diversity and seeks to incorporate education into all aspects of its work. The educational programme of the Department offers innovative training, teamwork and achieving the results that are most important to patients.

As part of the Surgery compulsory courses, students are primarily taught how to define, select and properly document relevant data about the surgical patient, to inform and respect the views of the patient and his/her family, the views of other colleagues and other experts. They learn the procedures for proper care of surgical infections with different surgical methods, get acquainted with diagnostic procedures in acute abdominal and other most common surgical diseases, master general concepts related to injuries (etiology and mechanisms of injuries, classification of injuries, theoretical knowledge of injuries of all parts of the body, fractures and dislocations), as well as other posttraumatic complications (thromboembolism, fat embolism, respiratory complications, digestive disorders and electrolytes, posttraumatic conditions and acute confusional states) that are adjusted to the learning outcomes of a particular level of education.

Within the Anaesthesiology and Reanimatology course, students acquire knowledge and skills in anaesthesiology and intensive care necessary to understand the needs of patients in the perioperative period, in the operating room and in the intensive care unit.

They master modern types of general, local (regional) and combined anaesthesia for surgical procedures, with prior assessment and preparation of patients for surgical procedures.

They acquire the necessary basic resuscitation skills, apply resuscitation procedures in life-threatening emergency situations and oversee the vital functions of anaesthetised patients in the application of invasive and non-invasive hemodynamic and respiratory monitoring and therapy. They apply the basic principles of parenteral and enteral nutrition as well as the basic principles of pain management. They keep medical records responsibly.

They participate in scientific research work respecting the ethical principles of scientific research work and evidence-based clinical trials. Through continuous learning and self-assessment, they improve their competencies and opinions necessary to raise the quality of professional work.
The main task of the Department is to enable students to work in the health care system in private and public clinics, hospitals or to continue their specialisation after graduation.
