With the introductory conference, held on March 14, 2022 in Maribor, officially opened the project "Design and Implementation of Master Degree in Palliative Care", implemented by the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Health Osijek within the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University in Osijek. The project was funded by the European Commission within the framework of the call for proposals ERASMUS-EDU -2021- EMJM-DESIGN, to which 148 projects from the field of higher education from institutions of the Member States of the European Union applied. The project of the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Health Osijek achieved an excellent 11th place out of a total of 48 projects that were approved for funding. The total budget of the project is 55,000 EUR.
Under the leadership of Prof. Aleksandar Včev, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Health Osijek, an initiative was launched in collaboration with the University of Maribor, Faculty of Health Sciences, and the University of Sarajevo to develop an English-language graduate programme in palliative care. The collaboration was also contracted with TERA Tehnopolis d.o.o., a member of the Josip Jurja Strossmayer University in Osijek, as technical support for the preparation and implementation of the project.
The project was presented at the conference by Prof. Martina Smolić. Ph.D., vice dean for Science and Postgraduate Studies at the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Health Osijek and Assistant Professor Štefica Mikšić, Ph.D., vice dean for Cooperation with teaching bases of the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Health Osijek, Assistant Professor Dr. Mateja Lorber, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, and Prof. Majda Pajnkihar., Ph.D. Head of Institute for Nursing Care of the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Maribor, and Prof. Arzija Pašalić, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Sarajevo.
Palliative care is concerned with the care of patients with terminal illnesses. According to the European Association for Palliative Care, the estimated need for some form of palliative care is 50% to 89% of all dying patients.
Given the growing need for palliative care services, there is also a growing need for well-trained professionals to provide these services. The goal of the project is to develop a graduate program that aims to provide standardized palliative care practitioner knowledge, skills, and competencies based on modern scientific evidence and in accordance with ethical and integrative principles. Implementation of the program will help increase the number of professionals competent to care for palliative patients and raise awareness of the importance of palliative care among students and the public to improve the quality of care.
