PATHOKINESIOLOGY OF THE TORSO AND UPPER EXTREMITIES

The objective of the course is to explain to the student the function of the torso and upper extremities in order to acquire the ability to select relevant physical therapeutic procedures and to assess their effectiveness.

Students will also be taught specific competencies:

Knowledge and understanding of kinetics and kinematics of motor control of the torso in static and dynamic activities, and upper extremities during stretching, catching and manipulation; knowledge of specificities in children and the elderly.

Comprehensive knowledge of risk factors for lower back pain and causes of pathological posture, impaired balance, falling and impairment of upper limb function.

Possibility to use and interpret the results of methods for analysis of keeping, balance, lifting and carrying of load; use of kinesiological methods and a broad knowledge of the protocol for assessing the level of physical functionality, damage to the upper extremities and their interpretation.

Kinesiology and pathokinesiology of the spine, pelvis and upper limbs: mechanics and pathomechanics of the musculoskeletal system, forces affecting individual parts of the body during movement and rest, specific functions of individual muscles and connective tissue, extent of movement of upper extremities.

Characteristics of normal posture and frequent forms of pathological posture of the body, the importance and influence of the muscles on the posture, analysis and assessment of the keeping of the body in different body positions, the transition between body positions. Normal motor control of posture/balance, stretching, catching and manipulation, specificities

in children and changes in the elderly.

Causes of balance damage, causes of falling, assessment of balance and risk of falling, interpretation results as the basis for selecting appropriate physical therapy procedures.

Assessment of risk factors for lower back pain: individual factors (physical condition) and risk factors relating to the performance of high-risk activities (elevation and carrying, forced position of body posture, repetitive activities); principles of prevention and resolution of impairments.

Causes of reduced upper extremity function; specific therapeutic methods for upper extremities, prostheses and orthoses.

Techniques for measuring kinematics and statics of the hand and upper extremity, assessment of the level of physical functions and structures, activities and participation in movement, interpretation of results as the basis for selecting appropriate physical therapy procedures.
