PHYSICAL THERAPY IN GERIATRICS

The objective of the course is to explain to the student the characteristics of ageing and primary, secondary and tertiary prevention in the later period of life.

Students will also be taught specific competencies:

Knowledge and understanding of the problems of healthy and sick elderly people, basic understanding of gerontology, causes of disease, symptoms and treatment.

Ability to assess the functional ability of healthy, sick and injured elderly persons and to prepare physical therapeutic programs based on evidence-based practice.

Capability of effective interdisciplinary communication and cooperation.

Demographics of ageing and fragility, ageing process and the elderly, cultural differences in the ageing process. Ageing process (definition of ageing, theory of ageing, biological and physiological changes, changes in posture and movement, motor control and motor learning).

Active ageing (physical activity, nutrition, mental activities, social welfare and safety). The most common diseases and injuries in elderly people, evidence-based assessment and physical therapy (characteristics of elderly patients, dietary disorders, hypothermia, hyperthermia, falling, osteoporosis, locomotor system diseases, arthritis, hypertension, coronary syndrome, heart failure, stroke, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, obstipation, incontinence, psychiatric problems – dementia).

Physical activity of elderly persons with reduced capacity and secondary prevention. Terminal physical therapy.

Holistic approach to the elderly (teamwork, interdisciplinary assessment, efficient communication).
