The Student Council of the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Health Osijek, in cooperation with the Dodir Association, organized an inspiring lecture entitled "How to approach deafblind people and how to communicate with them". The education was held on Tuesday, April 8th, 2025, at the faculty premises, and the lecturer was Andrea Palijaš, Master of Occupational Therapy.
The lecture covered key topics related to the everyday challenges faced by deafblind individuals, as well as ways in which healthcare professionals and other people can support them. Participants had the opportunity to learn about:
- Specificities of deafblindness - understanding the combination of vision and hearing impairments and their impact on the quality of life.
- Rules of communication and approach - practical tips for interacting with deafblind people.
- Leadership techniques – how to help deafblind people with mobility and daily activities.
- Obstacles in the healthcare system – a review of the barriers this group faces and ways to overcome them.
- The cultural heritage of Croatian sign language – the importance of using correct terminology and respecting the identity of deaf and deafblind people.
The education attracted great interest from students, and due to the limited number of places, 20 lucky people participated. At the end of the lecture, all participants received certificates of participation, which will serve as a valuable addition to their professional competencies.
The Faculty's Student Council would like to thank everyone who participated, especially lecturer Andrea Palijaš, for her professional and motivating approach. We hope that this education will be just one in a series of similar events that promote inclusion and raise awareness of the importance of accessibility in society.
