Conditions of enrolment

The conditions of enrolment in the Postgraduate Specialist Study Programme in Ophthalmology and Optometry are regulated with the study programme of the postgraduate specialist study programme in ophthalmology and optometry, the Rules on Conducting a Postgraduate Specialist Study Programme in Ophthalmology and Optometry, the temporary Statute of the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Health Osijek of the University of Josip JurajStrossmayer in Osijek and the Ordinance on Postgraduate Studies of the University of Josip JurajStrossmayer in Osijek.
A person who completed an appropriate university graduate study programme may enrol in a relevant specialist study programme.


Applications for the tender and the fulfilment of the requirements of the applicant for enrolment in a specialist study programme shall be considered by the Committee for Postgraduate Studies.

In accordance with the study programme of the postgraduate specialist study programme in ophthalmology and optometry, following persons may enrol in the specialist study programme:

Applicants from the Republic of Croatia and abroad who completed the integrated university undergraduate and graduate study programme in medicine, namely specialists in ophthalmology and optometry from the Republic of Croatia who enrol in the study programme as part of a specialisation in the field in question, or interested specialists in ophthalmology and optometry or specialists in ophthalmology and optometry from abroad.


The Committee for Postgraduate Studies appoints the expert committee for the recognition of a certain part of the exam and determining the differential exams that the applicant must pass for candidates who have passed equivalent curriculum or courses with an adequate exam in doctoral and specialist study programmes from other medical faculties in the Republic of Croatia and abroad.

Structure and organization of postgraduate specialist study programmes in ophthalmology and optometry

The structure of the specialist study programme is determined by the study programme of the specialist study.
The study programme by which the postgraduate specialist study programme in ophthalmology and optometry is established consists of organized courses and a final thesis.


Each student must receive a total of at least 60 ECTS points for completing his/her studies from organised courses. During their studies, students must attend and pass:

  • compulsory courses from a postgraduate specialist study programme in ophthalmology and optometry totalling 40.0 ECTS points,
  • compulsory courses from a postgraduate specialist study programme in ophthalmology and optometry totalling 7.5 ECTS points,
  • elective courses from a postgraduate specialist study programme in ophthalmology and optometry totalling 12.5 ECTS points.


The postgraduate specialist study programme in ophthalmology and optometry is completed by the successfully passing all exams and by passing the corresponding final specialist exam in accordance with the programme of studies for students who attend the study within the framework of specialisation in ophthalmology and optometry, or by passing all exams and writing the final specialist thesis for students who attend the study outside the specified specialisation.

The student passes the final specialist exam after attending all the classes and passing the exams of the specialist study programme.


The decision on the recognition of the specialist exam and the completion of the studies is made by the Faculty Council at the proposal of the Committee for Postgraduate Studies.


The final specialist thesis is an independent paper through which an applicant proves that he/she has acquired specialized professional knowledge necessary to perform highly professional tasks.
As an equivalent to the final specialist thesis of the applicant, the Committee for Postgraduate Studies may recognise one paper published in a magazine indexed in one of the international bibliographic databases provided that:

  • the paper has been published or accepted for printing following the beginning of specialisation and is closely related to the field of specialisation,
  • the student is the main or correspondent author, and that the mentor is a co-author,
  • the paper is drafted in a form of a professional or scientific paper,
  • one paper qualifies only one student of the postgraduate specialist study programme,
  • the student passes the application, evaluation and the thesis defence procedure according to the rules for conducting postgraduate specialist study programmes in ophthalmology and optometry.


Academic title obtained upon completion of studies

After graduating from their studies, they obtain the academic title of University Master's Degree in Ophthalmology and Optometry.

Competencies acquires by the student upon completion of studies

After graduating from their studies, students acquire general competences in the field of: communication skills, team work, scientific work, acquisition and transfer of knowledge, system management, professional development, ethics and regulations, health promotion.

Specific competencies refer to theoretical and practical knowledge and skills necessary for clinical work of specialists in ophthalmology and optometry.


In terms of specific competencies, students will acquire contemporary knowledge:

  • of a modern approach to the diagnosis of ophthalmic diseases and the management of patients with diseases of the anterior eye segment
  • for performing and interpreting ophthalmological diagnostic tests important for diagnosing and recommending an appropriate therapy
  • on the most important inflammatory and tumor processes of the eye and orbit, both in children and in adults, based on modern protocols of diagnostic procedures and treatment
  • on basic principles of surgical techniques in ophthalmology
  • on the importance of genetic advice and the possibility of prenatal diagnostics for family planning and prevention of some genetic ophthalmological diseases
  • on the competence to assess the type and severity of eye damage based on medical history and clinical examination, and to select the correct way to manage and prevent eye injuries
  • to know how to initiate and determine adequate modalities for treating eye mobility disorders and binocular vision
  • on epidemiology, clinical features, diagnostics and treatment of the most common pathological conditions of the rear segment of the eye and neurophthalmology
  • on all aspects of modern techniques for cataract surgery and refractive surgery and the types of intraocular lenses
  • on indications of the eye and orbit ultrasound, as well as biometry of the eye and interpretation of test results
  • on the specificities of intravitreal use of ophthalmic medicinal products
  • on diagnostic imaging techniques in ophthalmology and optometry
  • on findings in the field of experimental research in ophthalmology and ethical principles of research
  • on the mode of operation of the modern eye bank, types of ocular tissue grafts, selection of donors, taking, quality assessment, treatment, storage, distribution and transplantation of ocular tissue grafts, with special emphasis on the cornea
  • on therapeutic indications and specificities of ophthalmic medicinal products, possible methods of their use, adverse reactions, interactions
  • of the legal acts on the assessment of working capacity and necessary health conditions for drivers of motor vehicles, and they will know how to determine the degree of visual impairment and to recommend the necessary aids
  • on the treatment of emergencies in ophthalmology.


Possibility of continuing education

Upon completion of this study programme, students will have the opportunity to continue their education at the University postgraduate doctoral study of Biomedicine and Health at the Faculty of Medicine in Osijek, as well as at postgraduate doctoral studies of other medical faculties in the Republic of Croatia.

Psychiatric residents who enrol in the study programme as part of a specialisation in the subject area. Students from the Republic of Croatia and abroad who have completed an integrated university undergraduate and graduate study programme in medicine may enrol in this study programme on equal terms.


The Committee for Postgraduate Studies appoints the expert committee for the recognition of a certain part of the exam and determining the differential exams that the applicant must pass for candidates who have passed equivalent curriculum or courses with an adequate exam in doctoral and specialist study programmes from other medical faculties in the Republic of Croatia and abroad.


Structure and organization of postgraduate specialist study programmes in psychiatry

The structure of the specialist study programme is determined by the study programme of the specialist study.
The study programme by which the postgraduate specialist study programme in psychiatry is established consists of organized courses and a final specialist thesis.


Each student must receive a total of at least 60 ECTS points for completing his/her studies. The total of 60 ECTS points the student obtains through the completion of a specialist study programme shall be distributed to:

  • compulsory courses from a postgraduate specialist study programme in psychiatry totalling 45.0 ECTS points,
  • elective courses from a postgraduate specialist study programme in psychiatry totalling 10.0 ECTS points,
  • compulsory courses from a postgraduate specialist study programme in psychiatry totalling 5.0 ECTS points.


The postgraduate specialist study programme in psychiatry is completed by successfully passing all exams and the preparation and defence of the final specialist thesis in accordance with the programme of studies.


The student writes and defends the final specialist thesis after attending all the classes and passing the exams of the specialist study programme.


The final specialist thesis is an independent paper through which an applicant proves that he/she has acquired specialized professional knowledge necessary to perform highly professional tasks.
As an equivalent to the final specialist thesis of the applicant, the Committee for Postgraduate Studies may recognise one paper published in a magazine indexed in one of the international bibliographic databases provided that:

  • the paper has been published or accepted for printing following the beginning of specialisation and is closely related to the field of specialisation,
  • the student is the main or correspondent author, and that the mentor is a co-author,
  • the paper is drafted in a form of a professional or scientific paper,
  • one paper qualifies only one student of the postgraduate specialist study programme,
  • the student passes the application, evaluation and the thesis defence procedure according to the rules for conducting postgraduate specialist study programmes in psychiatry.


Academic title obtained upon completion of studies

After graduating from their studies, they obtain the academic title of University Master's Degree in Psychiatry.


Competencies acquires by the student upon completion of studies

After graduating from their studies, students acquire general competences in the field of: communication skills, team work, scientific work, acquisition and transfer of knowledge, system management, professional development, ethics and regulations, health promotion.

Upon completion of the study programme, students acquire specific competencies related to theoretical and practical knowledge, and skills necessary for clinical work of specialists in psychiatry, i.e. knowledge:

  • on the modern approach to the diagnosis of mental disorders and mental illnesses, and the management of psychiatric patients;
  • the performance and interpretation of diagnostic procedures (psychiatric interview, evaluation scale, laboratory tests) important for diagnosis and proper therapy management;
  • on the most common mental disorders, both in children and in adults, based on modern protocols of diagnostic procedures and treatment;
  • on basic therapeutic intervention algorithms in psychiatry;
  • on the importance of genetic advice and the possibility of early diagnostics for family planning, as well as the choice of adequate therapy during pregnancy;
  • on the competence to assess the type and severity of a psychiatric disorder based on the history and the assessment of mental status and to choose an adequate individualised psychopharmacotherapy;
  • on epidemiology, clinical features, diagnostics and treatment of the most common psychological disorders and mental diseases;
  • on indications of TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) and other techniques;
  • on diagnostic imaging techniques in psychiatry;
  • on findings in the field of experimental research in psychiatry and ethical principles of research;
  • on therapeutic indications and specificities of psychopharmaceuticals, possible methods of their use, adverse reactions, interactions;
  • on legal regulations in assessing the working ability and the necessary health conditions for motor vehicle drivers;
  • on the treatment of emergencies in psychiatry.


Possibility of continuing education

Upon completion of this study programme, students will have the opportunity to continue their education at the University postgraduate doctoral study of Biomedicine and Health at the Faculty of Medicine in Osijek, as well as at postgraduate doctoral studies of other medical faculties in the Republic of Croatia.

A person who completed an appropriate university graduate study programme may enrol in a relevant specialist study programme.

The study programme is open for other doctors of medicine with the motivation and will to complete a Postgraduate specialist study programme in neurology.


The Committee for Postgraduate Studies appoints the expert committee for the recognition of a certain part of the exam and determining the differential exams that the applicant must pass for candidates who have passed equivalent curriculum or courses with an adequate exam in doctoral and specialist study programmes from other medical faculties in the Republic of Croatia and abroad.

  • compulsory courses from a postgraduate specialist study programme in psychiatry totalling 3.0 ECTS points.
  • The postgraduate specialist study programme in neurology is completed by successfully passing all exams and the preparation and defence of the final specialist thesis in accordance with the programme of studies.

Upon completion of the study programme, students acquire specific competencies related to theoretical and practical knowledge, and skills necessary for clinical work of specialists in neurology, i.e. knowledge:

  • on the structure and function of particular elements of the central nervous system, organization of neurotransmitter systems and the neurobiology of learning and memory
  • on the modern approach to the neurological patient, specificities of taking patient's neurological anamnesis and heteranamnesis, as well as the neurological status
  • on the modern approach to the diagnosis of neurological disorders and illnesses, as well as the management of neurological patients
  • on performance, critical judgement and interpretation of diagnostic procedures in emergency neurological conditions (neurological status, laboratory tests, lumbar puncture, neuroimaging methods) important for diagnosis and recommending an appropriate therapy
  • on the treatment of emergencies in neurology
  • on the most common neurological disorders, both in children and in adults, based on modern protocols of diagnostic procedures and treatment
  • on basic diagnostic and therapeutic intervention algorithms in neurology
  • on the importance of genetic advice and the possibility of early diagnostics for family planning, as well as the choice of adequate therapy during pregnancy
  • competence to assess the type and severity of a neurological disorder based on the patient’s neurological history and status, to evaluate the degree of urgency of further processing and therapy, and to choose an adequate individualised pharmacotherapy and processing algorithm
  • on epidemiology, clinical features, diagnostics and treatment of the most common neurological disorders and diseases
  • on diagnostic possibilities, limitations and indications of neurophysiological techniques (evoked potentials, EEG, EMNG, TCD and CDFI carotid arteries) and the interpretation of test results
  • on neuroradiological diagnostic imaging techniques in neurology and the critical interpretation of test results
  • on findings in the field of experimental research in neurology and ethical principles of research
  • on therapeutic indications and specificities of psychopharmaceuticals, possible methods of their use, adverse reactions, interactions
  • on legal regulations in assessing the working ability and the necessary health conditions for motor vehicle drivers
  • on the evaluation and early recognition of potential candidates for neurosurgery and the possibility of preoperative treatment
  • on types, possibilities and predictable outcomes of neurorehabilitation.


Possibility of continuing education

Upon completion of this study programme, students will have the opportunity to continue their education at the University postgraduate doctoral study of Biomedicine and Health at the Faculty of Medicine in Osijek, as well as at postgraduate doctoral studies of other medical faculties in the Republic of Croatia.
