Description of the research

Medical radiation has an increasing share in the total radiation of the population and its share in the total radiation is constantly growing. Therefore, it is very important to optimize the quality of diagnostic information and radiation of the patient in various radiological procedures.

Research group led by prof. Dario Faj deals with the optimization of the quality of diagnostic information and patient radiation and the determination of patient radiation in radiological procedures, including dental radiology, radiotherapy and nuclear medicine. In addition, the research group also deals with the dosimetry of neutron contamination of photon beams used in radiotherapy with linear accelerators. Members of the research group have extensive experience in experimental measurements of both photonic and neutron contributions on patients' radiation, and significant contribution to the development of this research group was given by Monte Carlo simulations of various radiological and radiotherapy devices and procedures. Members of the research group participate in a number of domestic and international research communities and are involved in a number of scientific research projects in the field of medical physics.

Description of the research

Impaired aesthetics of the orofacial area have an impact on emotional wellbeing, social contacts, self-esteem and daily functioning. Impaired aesthetics worries both adults and adolescents. During adolescence, the child's physical and psychological development is intensive, and the child's wellbeing also affects the family relations. The efficiency of the therapy needs to be valorised from a biological, biomechanical, psychological and public health aspect. The aim of the research group is to examine the determinants of therapy requirements, children's cooperation during therapy and withdrawal from therapy, primarily orthodontic. Craniodentofacial biometric predictors (dental, skeletal, soft tissue) and psychosocial factors are analysed. The focus is on the role of the family and parents/ guardians. Psychometric, anthropometric, photogrammetric, X-ray cephalometric and gnatometric measurements are used. To examine the parents' perception of impaired quality of life of the child (oral symptoms, oral function, aesthetics, psychological and social aspects) and the impact of the child's condition of dentition and occlusion on family relationships instruments that have not been used in Croatia are translated, adapted and validated (Parenter / Caregiver Perception Questionnaire). Parental assessment is compared with the attitude of children, which is assessed by the Child Perception Questionnaire. In addition, the Family Impact Scale and Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale instruments are translated and validated to examine parental emotions, family activities, family conflicts and financial difficulties that may be associated with impaired dental condition, malocclusion, dental therapy, and co-operability during therapy. In addition, children and parents independently assess the degree of satisfaction with the orofacial appearance, the need for therapy and whether they want the therapy. Predictors of search, demand and cooperation are explored by hierarchical regression analysis and mediation and moderation models. Defining the determinants of patient cooperation during therapy and the success of therapy can provide guidelines for directing the limited resources of the public health system to the choice of patients who will benefit most from it.

Research description:

The research work of the Translational Medicine Research Group

includes research in several disciplines: basic pharmacology, pathophysiology, metabolism, human genetics, mineral metabolism and pharmacoepidemiology. Translational medicine (TM) implies the transfer of scientific achievements in the study of patients and populations to clinical application and, conversely, the transfer of knowledge from clinical practice to research. There are growing challenges in biomedical research, from the increasing incidence of chronic diseases to the lack of accurate diagnostic methods and specific treatment at the advanced stage of the disease. Advances in basic scientific research increase the responsibility of physicians, scientists, ie those conducting biomedical research, in translating significant scientific discoveries into clinical practice in a faster and more efficient manner and to ensure benefits for the nation's health and new approaches for improving human health. There are various advantages of translational studies that benefit patients, eg phenotypically well-defined groups of patients, application of basic laboratory, research of biological materials, detailed understanding of molecular mechanisms. Some of the features of translational research are shortened time from discovery to clinical implementation, two-way connection of laboratory and patient bed ("bench to bedside to bench"), bridging between basic and clinical research and multidisciplinary research cooperation. Developmental pathways in translational medicine are basic molecular research, preclinical laboratory research, clinical drug trials, patient databases, imaging methods, pharmacological treatment, epidemiology, biobank, disease outcome research. The scientific activity of the Research Group for TM is carried out through a series of scientific research projects dealing with the study of hepatotoxicity of drugs, gastroprotective effects of herbal drugs and mechanisms of renoprotective effects of antihyperglycemics, as well as mechanisms of adipogenesis to pharmacoepidemiological studies of breast cancer. Since 2014, members of the Translational Medicine Research Group have traditionally organized the International Monothematic Conference on Viral Hepatitis C (IMC-HCV), which brings together scientists from the United States, Japan and Egypt every year. Memebers of the Group are also involved in organisation of ISABS Conferrence every other year. ISABS is the Conference on Forensic, Anthropologic and Medical Genetics and Mayo Clinic Lectures in Translational Medicine. As part of this collaboration, members of the TM research team are given the opportunity to work and train in laboratories at home and abroad.

Research description: The physiological process of bone healing does not usually result in the optimal volume of the alveolar ridge required for implant-prosthetic rehabilitation. The purpose of augmentation procedures is to create a skeleton that supports new bone formation in order to obtain the optimal volume of alveolar bone required for dental implant placement. The success of augmentation procedures and implant prosthetic rehabilitation depends not only on the clinical skills of the practitioner, but also on the proper selection and use of the various biomaterials. The science of biomaterials and dental implantology is one of the fastest growing disciplines in dentistry. The development of new biomaterials and the improvement of existing ones is certainly an area that requires research attention. The research group led by Assist. Prof. Željka Perić Kačarević is engaged in research of biomaterials for soft tissue and bone regeneration in humans and animals, focusing on bone substitutes and membranes for guided regeneration of bone and soft tissue. The research group is involved in optimising augmentation procedures and determining the quantity and quality of newly formed bone and soft tissue based on clinical, histological and radiological evaluations. The members of the research group have experience in the field of oral surgery, periodontology, dental implantology, dental radiology and histology with histomorphometry. The research group closely cooperates with the research laboratory of the company Botiss GmbH, which enables the connection of the research group to the current needs of the market and economy. In this sense, the research group actively participates in the research of existing biomaterials on the market and in the development of new regenerative biomaterials to be brought to the market. A recent example of such activities is the research group's work on the development of the new biomaterial NOVAMag® membrane (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2452199X21005387), a new magnesium-based resorptive membrane that is fully commercialised. The members of the team were involved from the very beginning in the development of the idea and in the laboratory tests of the membrane properties, up to animal tests that confirmed the good properties of the new biomaterial and its biocompatibility with tissues. The membrane has good strength that prevents its breakdown, but unlike non-absorbable membranes, it does not need to be removed because it is biodegradable, avoiding a second surgical procedure and additional discomfort for the patient. After complete resorption of the membrane, fully regenerated healthy tissue remains at the augmentation site. Almost simultaneously, work was also done on the development of a new system for fixing membranes (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2452199X21005028) used in the process of guided bone regeneration. This is a completely biodegradable system based on NOVAMag® fixation screws made of a magnesium alloy. Thanks to this feature, a second surgical intervention is avoided. The two new biomaterials mentioned are completely new to the market and are the future in the development of biomaterials for bone and soft tissue regeneration in dentistry.

As part of the preparation of his dissertation, Matej Tomas, DMD stayed at the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, University of Rijeka under the supervision of Prof. Olga Cvijanović Peloza and mentor Assist. Prof. Željka Perić Kačarević, to complete the laboratory part of his dissertation. With this cooperation between the Faculty of Dentistry and Health and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka, the foundations for further cooperation and application of biomaterials in animal and human studies were renewed.

The international cooperation of the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Health Osijek with the private company Botiss GmbH (Berlin, Germany) should also be highlighted. The company Botiss is engaged in the development, research and production of biomaterials for the regeneration of bone and soft tissue in dentistry. This agreement enables scientific cooperation between researchers of the faculty and the laboratory for research and development of biomaterials of the company Botiss. The cooperation agreement provides the faculty with the opportunity to conduct scientific research projects and opens up additional opportunities for scientific advances in the field of basic medical research and dentistry. In addition, the cooperation also aims to meet the needs of the business community and, accordingly, to develop the teaching programs and the teaching process at the Faculty. In this sense, faculty members actively participate in the research of existing regenerative biomaterials and the development of new ones to be brought to the market. Within the framework of cooperation, the dissertation of Marija Čandrlić, DMD, is prepared, https://botiss-campus.com/comparison-of-maxresorb-inject-and-cerabone-in-socket-preservation-qualitative-and-quantitative-histologic-study-in-humans/

Description of the research

Oral health needs to be approached to as a fundamental part of general health. The possible link between chronic oral inflammatory conditions and systemic health, as well as inappropriate habits, makes it one of the most interesting aspects facing the dental community for more than a century. The project will establish the relationship between socioeconomic and health variables with the incidence of apical periodontitis. Apical periodontitis is an inflammatory disorder of the periradicular tissues mostly caused by a long-lasting microbial infection within the root canal system of the affected tooth. The disease affects a large number of adults, and the frequency increases with increasing age of the subjects. In order to examine the effects of systemic factors on the condition of the oral mucosa, the association of the severity of eating disorders with oral pathological processes in the oral cavity through a multivariate approach will be determined and the prevalence of infectious and non-infectious oral diseases in a representative sample of patients with eating disorders. As part of the project, epidemiological studies will be conducted to determine whether there is a difference in the rate of healing of periapical lesions in smokers and non-smokers.

Through the assessment of these variables, it will be determined which factors are most associated with the occurrence of pathological changes of the oral mucosa and periapical tissue. The obtained results will enable the development of guidelines for preventive and therapeutic measures.

Description of the research

The Laboratory for Temporomandibular Dysfunction uses a modern device ARCUSDigma2, an ultrasound device for recording the movement of the mandibular joints and mandibula in healthy people and patients suffering from temporomandibular dysfunction.

Diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disfunction are based on the obtained registers and all the data are transferred into the PROTAR EVO 7 articulator. Consequently, therapeutic devices are made, ie splints and prosthetic items, which are individualized to suit each patient. The obtained data are used for scientific papers, presentations at scientific and professional conferences and for the teaching of students in dental medicine and dental hygiene study programmes.

This is the first, and for now the only, such diagnostic laboratory in the area of Slavonia and the Republic of Croatia.
