Prof. Aleksandar Včev, PhD – dean


Prof. Primarius Aleksandar Včev, MD, PhD was born on 27th December 1960 in Orahovica, where he graduated from high school. In 1985 he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University in Zagreb (dislocated Study programme of Medicine in Osijek). Throughout 1985 and 1986 he completed his internship in MC Osijek and MC Zadar. 


In 1987 he graduated from the postgraduate study programme of Clinical physiopathology at the Faculty of Medicine at the University in Rijeka, and in 1989 he defended his master thesis titled: Effect of Extrahepatic Cholestasis on Values for Serum Proteins.

In 1990 he was appointed to scientific teaching assistant at the Faculty of Medicine at the University in Zagreb.


From 1986 until 1989 he was employed at the Department of Physiopathology of the Faculty of Medicine at the University in Zagreb for the needs of the Study programme of Medicine in Osijek. Since 1989 he was employed in the Clinic for Internal Diseases in the Clinical Hospital Osijek. During the Croatian Independence War, as part of his work obligation, he was working at the same position.

He passed the specialist examination for internal medicine in 1993.


In 1994 he defended his doctoral dissertation at the Faculty of Medicine at the University in Rijeka titled: Biochemical and Pathomorphological Changes in the Liver and in the Kidneys during the Obstructive Jaundice in Rats. 


In 1995 he graduated from the postgraduate study programme of Gastroenterology and hepatology at the Faculty of Medicine, University in Zagreb.


In 1996 he was appointed to senior teaching assistant at the Department of Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine at the University in Zagreb, for the needs of the Study programme of Medicine in Osijek.


In 1997 he and the food engineer Marko Lukić published the book Nutrition and Ulcer Disease, edition by the University of J. J. Strossmayer in Osijek. The second edition came out in 2005 and the third in 2009. 


In 1998 he was chosen as deputy head at the Department of Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of J. J. Strossmayer in Osijek.

 

In 1999 he was appointed to the scientific-teaching grade assistant professor at the Department of Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of J. J. Strossmayer in Osijek.


In 2001 he was one of the founders of the National Committee for elimination of viral hepatitis


From 2001 till 2004 he was president of the Managing Board of the Health Centre Osijek


From 2001 till 2003 he was director of the Clinical Hospital Osijek.


In 2002 he published the university course book “Diseases of the Colon”.


From 2002 till 2017 he was the head of the Clinic for Internal Diseases of the CHC Osijek. 


In 2003 he was appointed to the scientific-teaching grade associate professor at the Department of Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of J. J. Strossmayer in Osijek.


In 2004 he was chosen as president of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of J. J. Strossmayer in Osijek.


In 2004 his status as subspecialist of gastroenterology was acknowledged as well as the title primarius by the Ministry of Health and Social Care. 


In 2005 he was appointed vice dean for classes and student relations at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of J. J. Strossmayer in Osijek.


In 2006 he and the food engineer Marko Lukić published the book Nutrition and Inflammatory Bowel Disease, edition by University of J. J. Strossmayer Osijek.


In 2006 he was appointed to the scientific-teaching grade full professor at the Department of Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of J. J. Strossmayer in Osijek. From 2008 till 2010 he was a member of the Managing Council of the CH and CHC Osijek. 


In 2009 he was chosen as dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of J. J. Strossmayer in Osijek.


In 2009 he was also appointed as scientific advisor in the scientific field Biomedicine, Basic medical sciences.  


In 2011 he was appointed to the scientific-teaching grade full professor with tenure at the University of Josip Juraj Strossmayer in Osijek.


Since 2011 he has been a member of the National committee for specialist education and training of doctors of medicine.


Since 2012 he has been the president of the City’s association Red Cross Osijek.


From 2014 till 2016 he was the president of the Managing Council of the Institute for Anthropology in Zagreb. 


In 2014 he and Ass.Prof. Dražen Pulanić, PhD published the book Anaemia, edition by University of J. J. Strossmayer in Osijek.


In 2015 he published the first Croatian edition of the book Objective Structured Clinical Examination – OSCE, where he was the editor together with Neel Burton, edition by University of J. J. Strossmayer in Osijek and University of Oxford.


During 1988 he took part in an education programme on digestive endoscopy in CHC Ljubljana, and during 1993 he took part in an education programme on abdominal ultrasound in CHC Rijeka. In 2004 he took part in an education programme on endoscopic ultrasound in Amsterdam and in 2005 he took part in an education programme on digestive endoscopy in Bruxelles. As researcher he participated and still participates in 6 scientific projects and as a consultant at 1 scientific project of the Ministry of science, education and sport of the Republic of Croatia. He was also project manager of the international (Croatia-Hungary) IPA project “Health Management”.


He published overall 260 papers66 of which in journals that are indexed in Current Contents. He was cited 1014 times. 


From 2009 till 2013 he was a member of the Scientific Field Committee for Biomedicine and Health in CRO. In 2012 he was chosen as vice president of the expert committee for awarding state rewards for science, for the scientific field biomedical sciences. 


Three colleagues compiled and defended the master’s thesis under his mentorship at the Faculty of Medicine at the University in Rijeka and at the Faculty of Medicine of the University in Zagreb, 8 colleagues compiled and defended their dissertations, one at the Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology at the University in Zagreb and 7 at the Faculty of Medicine Osijek. He is mentor to two colleagues whose dissertation topics where approved at the Faculty of Medicine in Osijek. He was mentor for 50bachelor’s theses at the nursing studies and for 2 master’s theses at the studies of medicine. 


He was consulting editor on 7 university course books and on 4 university postgraduate and graduate studies. 


In 2007 he received the Acknowledgement of the City league against cancer Osijek

In 2009 he received the Charter of the Croatian Medical Association

In 2010 he received the Charter of the Red Cross of the City of Osijek         

In 2011 he received the Award Plaque of the town of Pregrada

In 2015 he received the Award Plaque and Big Medal of the University in Zadar

In 2016 he received the annual award for the field of higher education in the Brod-Posavina County 

In 2016 he received the Coat of Arms of the City of Osijek for contribution in medical science

In 2017 he received the Gold Award Plaque of the town of Orahovica


Since 2014 he has been a regular member of the Croatian Academy of Medical Sciences, and since 2017 a regular member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. He is also a member of the Croatian Medical Association, Croatian Society of Internal Medicine, Croatian Society for Integrative Medicine, Croatian Society of Gastroenterology, European Society for Integrative Medicine, World Associations of Gastroenterologists, Croatian Medical Chamber and the Croatian Association of Volunteer Doctors 1990-1991. 


He launched in 2010 the Undergraduate and Graduate university study programme of Nursing that are conducted since the academic year 2010/2011, which were first of their kind at that time in Croatia. Since the academic year 2010/2011 the Undergraduate and Graduate university study programme of medical-laboratory diagnostics are conducted, which were also the first of their kind in Croatia. 


In the academic year 2015/2016 he launched the Undergraduate university study programme of Physiotherapy and Undergraduate university study programme of Dental Hygiene. The Undergraduate university study programme of Dental Hygiene was the first of its kind in Croatia. 


In the academic year 2016/2017 he launched the Integrated undergraduate and graduate university study programme of dental medicine. In the academic year 2017/2018 he launched the Graduate university study programme of Physiotherapy.


He has launched dislocated study programmes throughout Slavonia: the dislocated Undergraduate university study programme of nursing in Nova Gradiška, the dislocated Graduate university study programme of nursing in Slavonski Brod, the dislocated Undergraduate university study programme of physiotherapy in Orahovica and the dislocated Graduated university study programme of physiotherapy in Orahovica.


He has also launched the Postgraduate specialist study programme of Clinical epidemiology, the Postgraduate specialist study programme of  Ultrasound in cardiology, the Postgraduate specialist study programme of  Anaesthesiology and reanimatology, the Postgraduate specialist study programme of  Internal Medicine and the Postgraduate specialist study programme of Ophthalmology and optometry. 


Furthermore, he has founded the following institutes: Institute for biological anthropology, Institute for dental medicine, Institute for mineral metabolism, Institute for integrative medicine, Institute for clinical medicine and Institute for clinical epidemiology at the Faculty of Medicine Osijek. 


At the Faculty for Dental Medicine and Health Osijek he founded the Institute for biology and the Institute for integrative psychiatry.
