As part of the 5th Postgraduate Course on Rehabilitation in Clinical Medicine in Orahovica, organized by the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Health Osijek, a new textbook for medical students titled "Heart and Blood Vessel Diseases" was presented. The textbook is authored by Prim. Aleksandar Včev, PhD, Prim. Goran Krstačić, PhD, and Assoc. Prof. Antonija Krstačić, PhD. Dr. Goran Krstačić highlighted that this textbook is designed for students of dental medicine, health studies, medicine, as well as for specialists and residents in dental medicine, cardiology, and internal medicine. It was written and harmonized according to current Croatian and international scientific and professional guidelines, as well as clinical practice at the time of its writing.
“This is a monumental work, spanning 577 pages, with contributions from 31 authors from five European countries. For the first time in Croatia, this textbook brings together diseases of the heart and blood vessels across all organs in the human body. Until now, we’ve had excellent resources covering heart and vascular diseases as part of internal medicine textbooks, but this is the first time everything is combined in one place,” said Dr. Krstačić.
He gave an example of a multidisciplinary approach, describing how a patient with high blood pressure might be referred to a cardiologist, who could suspect kidney issues, leading to a referral to a nephrologist, who might notice changes in the eyes and refer the patient to an ophthalmologist, ultimately diagnosing a third-stage hypertensive patient with diabetes that requires attention from a diabetologist. All of this is compiled in this textbook, offering a unified approach to treating patients efficiently.
Dr. Krstačić also noted that it took three years to complete the textbook, which is the third textbook produced by the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Health Osijek in the past six years, following Neurocardiology, which won the "Academician Andrija Štampar" Award for publishing excellence, and Cardioneurology, which received the "Dr. Pavo Filaković" Award.
During the promotion, Prof. Branislav Milovanović, PhD from the Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases in Belgrade also spoke. The Faculty’s Dean, Prim. Aleksandar Včev, PhD, concluded the event by emphasizing the importance of Orahovica as the ideal location for this textbook's promotion.
“We didn’t choose Orahovica by accident for the promotion of this textbook. The city offers excellent climatic conditions for the treatment of heart and vascular diseases, which is why we are finishing the construction and arrangement of the Center for Diagnostics, Treatment, and Rehabilitation of Cardiovascular Diseases here. All our guests, renowned medical experts from various countries, quickly recognized these advantages,” said Dr. Včev.
