Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry

Clinical Hospital "Sveti Duh" Zagreb
Ophthalmology Clinic

The Ophthalmology Clinic of the Clinical Hospital "Sveti Duh" in Zagreb, as the teaching hospital of the Department, has always been known for the high quality of professional work and the rapid transfer of world knowledge into professional practice in Croatia. This was also recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO), which included the Clinic among the world's centres of excellence and declared it the WHO Collaborating Centre for Child Eye Care. It is also the Reference Centre of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Croatia for Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.

The Department, alongside the professional expertise based on a humanistic perspective, which postulates the unconditionality of providing health care based on ethical principles, teaches students conventional, but also sophisticated, state-of-the-art methods of the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases in accordance with modern scientific knowledge. Students are given insight into the latest technologies such as keratometry, eye ultrasound, corneal topography, optical coherence tomography of the anterior and posterior segment of the eye, endothelial biomicroscopy, electrophysiology of the eye, wide-angle retinal imaging. Students are introduced to microsurgical procedures on the eye such as cataract surgery, glaucoma, corneal transplantation, posterior segment eye surgery, and management of ocular and periocular trauma. In addition, they learn about various methods and the creativity of oculoplastic surgery up to new laser technologies.

The modernity of the Clinic is shown by the fact that it founded the first Croatian eye bank, performed the first ultrasound operation of a child's cataract, first transplanted the amniotic membrane, first performed corneal cross-linking for keratoconus, first presented wide-angle 3D eye surgery technology to the world and gene therapy with Luxturna® in Croatia.

A total of five scientific projects were implemented at the Clinic with the support of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports (Ministry of Science and Technology) and the Croatian Science Foundation. Members of the Department participate as editors, authors and co-authors in publishing professional books. Active monitoring of the quality of health services is manifested through the comparison of work and harmonisation of the level with the current world standards following current professional and scientific literature.

At the 42nd International Book Fair Interliber in 2019, the promotion of the monograph "Ars Ophthalmologica" was held, which presented 12 university textbooks published by the Ophthalmology Clinic of the Clinical Hospital "Sveti Duh" in the last 8 years. From the first modern textbook of ophthalmology in the Republic of Croatia "Seminaria Ophthalmologica" published in 2011, through the only pharmacological ophthalmological manual in Croatian "Pharmacotherapia Ophthalmologica", the unique "Atlas of Ultrasound", "Atlas of Ultrasound Biomicroscopy", "Atlas of posterior eye segment" and "Atlas of the cornea" in Croatian, to the textbook "Amblyopia" in Croatian and English, which is dedicated to the most common eye diseases in children. Three more university textbooks are currently being published.
