The field of mental health is a very important factor in the overall health and quality of life of an individual. Mental health disorders are constantly on the rise, so it can be assumed that in the coming years, these disorders will be at the very top of the world's population.
The Department of Psychiatry has a clear goal, and that is to train students to understand and help a person suffering from mental disorders within the profession. Mental health, psychiatric illnesses and conditions are a large area with large variations, both on a quantitative and qualitative level, so the goal is to teach students the general rules of access to such persons, but also to individualise problems. In understanding these processes, as in practical solutions, psychiatry uses state-of the-art knowledge of the basic medical sciences, connecting them with the experiential knowledge of all scientific disciplines.
The Department of Psychiatry is striving to get undergraduate and graduate students more engaged. Students are introduced to modern concepts in understanding mental disorders from the biological, psychological, etiological basics to the biological, psychotherapeutic and sociotherapeutic methods of treatment. Within the courses, students are provided with insight into psychiatry through new guidelines and methods of treatment. The practical work of all processes of integrative psychiatry is performed at the Centre for Integrative Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of the Psychiatric Hospital "Sveti Ivan" which integral part are also the Ministry of Health's Reference Centre for the Treatment of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) of Psychiatric Diseases and Comorbidities and the Reference Centre for Psychotherapy, Psychosocial Interventions and Early Intervention in Psychotic Disorders.
