COMMUNICATION SKILLS

The objective of the course is to show to students the basic principles, types and shapes of human communication and specific communication in health care, and to train them for efficient communication with patients and their family members. 

Introduction to communication: definition of communication, term, types, objectives and principles of communication; verbal communication; non-verbal communication; obstacles in communication; listening, meaning of listening, techniques of active listening; complaints and technique for complaints solving; feedback; structure and notification; assertive communication; empathy and meaning of empathy in communication with the patient and his family; communication with people with limited capacity; communication with children and adolescents; communication with elderly people; presentation skills; communication in a team; leadership styles.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe the definition of communication and explain the concept, types, goals and principles of communication;
  2. List the characteristics of information and therapeutic communication;
  3. Demonstrate basic nonverbal and paraverbal messages;
  4. Compare basic communication styles;
  5. Demonstrate basic barriers to communication with the patient and family member;
  6. Resolve simple complaints in relation to the patient and family members
  7. Present the specifics of communication with people with disabilities, children, adolescents and the elderly;
  8. Identify and select the appropriate leadership style in the team;
  9. Prepare and deliver a presentation on a given topic in the field of nursing;
