ENGLISH LANGUAGE II

The second part, which consists of a three-part course (2 years), is based on physical systems that have not been taught in the first year, and again the main emphasis is on practical application, i.e. on nursing interventions and the health care process related to specific diseases of physical systems. By adopting a number of the most frequent basis of words, prefixes and suffixes, students will master a kind of tool that will enable them not only to recognize a large number of medical terms, but also to create words as needed.  

The aim of the course is to make it easier for students to follow professional literature in English, and to prepare them for the process of continuous (self) education, which will be an integral part of their future professional life by training the skills of researching, summing up and, especially, presenting the data and information. 

Female reproductive system: anatomy, main organs and their function; menstruation and pregnancy; birth; hormones; keywords, word roots, main terms; diseases: gynaecological and breast diseases; pregnancy problems and infant diseases; laboratory tests, practical application:Nursing care – breast cancer; tasks and exercises.

Male reproductive system: anatomy, main organs and their function; keywords, word roots, main terms; diseases of the male reproductive system; sexually transmitted diseases; laboratory tests, clinical procedures, practical application:Nursing care – prostate cancer; tasks and exercises.

Respiratory system: anatomy and physiology of breathing; main organs, air passage, oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange; keywords, word roots, main concepts; respiratory diseases; practical application of:Nursing care for patients suffering from respiratory diseases; tasks and exercises

Blood system: composition and formation of blood; blood cells and their function; blood groups; blood clotting; keywords, word roots, main terms; blood system diseases; laboratory tests, clinical procedures; tasks and exercises 

Lymph and immune (defence) system:lymph system, vessels, nodes, lymph – function; immune system – organs and function; keywords, word roots, main concepts; lymph and immune diseases; laboratory tests, clinical procedures; practical application:Nursing care of a patient with AIDS; tasks and exercises

Cardiovascular system:blood vessels and blood bypass; anatomy and cardiac physiology; conduction system; blood pressure; keywords, word roots, main concepts; heart diseases; cardiovascular diseases; laboratory tests, clinical procedures; practical use:Nursing care of a patient with heart diseases; tasks and exercises

Internal secretion glands system (endocrine system): structure and function; thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal glands, pancreas, pituitary gland, ovaries, testicles, pineal glands: hormones and function; keywords, word roots, associated professional terminology; diseases: ‘hipo’ and ‘hiper’ secretion of individual glands; practical application:Nursing care of a patient with diabetes; tasks and exercises

Nervous system:General nervous system material; neurons, nerves and neuroglia; brain; spinal cord and membrane; keywords, word roots, main concepts; nervous system diseases; practical application of:Nursing care of a patient with MS; tasks and exercises.

Special senses – eye and ear:eye– anatomy and physiology; keywords, word roots, main terms; refractive error; diseases; ear– anatomy and physiology; external, medium, internal ear; keywords, word roots, main terms; ear diseases; practical application of: Nursing care of ophtalmic patients; tasks and exercises.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. identify the most important parts of body systems, describe their functions, distinguish the most frequent disorders of a particular body system and plan the process of nursing healthcare accordingly (nursing interventions).
  2. apply knowledge of medical suffixes, prefixes and combining forms when creating medical terms related to body systems discussed (analysing the medical terms provided by the instructor and forming new medical terms based on English definition);
  3. efficiently search through/for professional data on the Internet as well as among written professional resources, selecting useful pieces of information, summarizing as well as presenting them, at the same time taking into consideration the visual identity of the presented materials, correct spelling as well as pronunciation of both Medical English and General English terms
