PSYCHIATRY

The course goal is to acquire knowledge in psychopathology and knowledge in classification of mental disorders in main diagnostic groups (organic caused mental disorders; mental disorders caused by psychoactive substances; schizophrenia and similar disorders; mood disorders; sleep and diet disorders; personality disorders; pervasive developmental disorders; disorders related to children’s age and adolescent age. Furthermore, the goals are that the student acquires knowledge about specific approach to the patient with mental disorders – to define nurses’ role in work with patients who have mental disorders or mental complaints, to define possible predictors of mental disorders.

Introduction to psychiatry, basics of psychopathology, mental disorders of organic origin, mental and behavioural disorders as consequences of psychoactive substance usage. Schizophrenia, schizotypal and other insane disorders, affective disorders and mood disorders, personality disorders, neurotic disorders as consequences of stress exposal. Mental retardation, mental development disorders, behavioural and emotional disorders in children’s age and adolescence. Urgent states in psychiatry. Contemporary psychiatry department organisation. Basics of various approaches in psychiatry. Psychopharmacology. Socio-legal status of mentally ill patients and their rights.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. recognize the general psychopathology (disorders of awareness; communication disorders; attention disorders; perception disorders; psychomotor disorders; thought disorders; mood and affect, volitional disorders; will disorders; of memory and intellectual ability disorders; impulse disorders; memory and memory disorders);
    2. approach the mentally ill patient independently, define the role of the nurse/technician in keeping, medical records and identify the basic classification of mental illnesses;
    3. judge the specificity of the approach to a patient with a mental disorder (approach to a patient with psychosis; approach to a patient with mania; approach to a patient with depression; approach to a patient with delirium; approach to a patient with dementia; approach to a patient with an anxiety disorder; approach to an aggressive patient; approach to a suicidal patient);
    4. name basic psychopharmaceuticals and recognize serious side effects of drugs;
    5. define possible predictors of psychological disorders.
