CLINICAL PRACTICE III.

Developing necessary knowledge and skills to conduct health care on surgical patients, specific professional knowledge, skills and viewpoints for psychological and physical patient preparation for a surgical procedure, knowledge and skills to identify postoperative difficulties and complications, also basic procedures to handle them, identify and react to a patient’s needs, having a holistic approach, in the field of health care, develop ability of keeping up with new achievements and acquire new understanding and knowledge, conduct all procedures of health care in accordance with the ethical code, educate patients, identify psychological states of patients, develop knowledge on therapeutic procedures with psychiatric patients and on the side effects of psycho-pharma therapy, develop skills of working with patients in a group (group therapy).

During the clinical practices students will apply the gained theoretical knowledge and skills from the field of health care of surgicalpatients and health care of psychiatric patients. 

Health care of surgical patients: surgical asepsis (clothes, shoes, space, instruments), preoperative psychological preparation of patient, preoperative physical preparation of patient (preparation of operative field, preparation of gastrointestinal tract), premedication, preoperative nursing documentation, monitoring and keeping record of postoperative patient condition, prevention and identification of postoperative complications (bleeding, hypovolemic shock, dehiscence and disruption of surgical wound, infection of surgical wound, paralytic ileus, deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism), identifying and treating postoperative difficulties (pain, nausea, vomiting, abdominal distension, hiccough) intracranial pressure – monitoring, thoracic drainage – monitoring, hemodynamic monitoring, respiratory monitoring. Health care of patient on artificial ventilation (preparation of ventilator, care of patient’s respiratory tract, monitoring ventilator function, monitoring and keeping record of all changes regarding patient), observation and dressing for surgical wound, health care of patient with stoma (urostomy, ileostomy, colostomy).

Health care of psychiatric patients: methods of data collection – interview, therapeutic communication, therapy contract, specific types of therapy, techniques of work in a small group, family therapy, socio-therapeutic methods of treatment and care, observation and notes on side effects of therapy, assisting during electroconvulsive stimulation, preparation of patient for diagnostic examination, feeding patient with anorexia (nasogastric tube, techniques of persuasion), care of patient with stupor, emergency admission of patient, care of aggressive patients – straitjacket, care of suicidal patients (gastric lavage, observation and identifying complications, methadone maintenance treatment), care of overdose patients (antidote, observing complications), care of acutely intoxicated patients (detox therapy, observation and identifying complications).
