Theory of health care

Introduce students to the historical development of nursing theories and the scientific background of nursing as a profession.

Development of the theory of health care (history, terminology). Theoretical development process. Concepts of health care (system, person, environment, health), conceptual models. Middle- and long-range theories in health care. Philosophy of health care (history), contemporary health care. Branches of philosophy and applications in health care (epistemiology, logic, aesthetics, ethics, politics, metaphysics). Science (history, research), science of health care.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain the general concepts of science, philosophy, and theory.
  2. Argue the role of the nurse in science.
  3. Distinguish between large theories, medium-range theories, and theories of practice
  4. Explain the application of special branches of philosophy in health care.
  5. Conduct a description, analysis, and evaluation of the theory according to the criteria.
  6. Analyse the concept according to given criteria.
  7. Develop a positive attitude towards ongoing research in the field of health care theories.
  8. Critically evaluate the importance of health care theory in modern health care.
