PRIMARY AND SECONDARY PREVENTION OF BREAST CANCER

Show students the basic principles of prevention, especially breast cancer. Explain to students the anatomy and pathological changes in breast diseases. Identify and classify risk factors for breast cancer. To enable students to distinguish basic radiological imaging methods in breast disease diagnosis; mammography, breast ultrasound and breast magnetic resonance imaging. To explain to students the principle of a multidisciplinary approach in the treatment of breast cancer.

General principles of prevention.  Basic notions of breast anatomy.  Benign and malignant pathological changes in the breast. Breast cancer epidemiology. Risk factors for breast cancer. Radiological imaging methods in breast disease diagnosis. Mammography; diagnostic and screening. Breast ultrasound and elastography. Magnetic resonance of breasts. Breast biopsy with a wide needle controlled by ultrasound. Pathohistological samples for the diagnosis of breast cancer. Multidisciplinary approach in breast cancer treatment; surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and hormone therapy. Primary chemotherapy for breast cancer.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. evaluate the primary and secondary prevention of breast cancer;
2. categorize benign and malignant changes in the breast;
3. self-assess risk factors for breast cancer;
4. present radiological imaging methods in the prevention and diagnosis of breast disease;
5. assess the basic indications, i.e. contraindications, for specific groups of breast radiological examinations;
6. present a multidisciplinary approach to the management of breast cancer.
