ORGANIZATION OF PALLIATIVE HEALTH CARE

To direct students to medical, cultural and psychological aspects of palliative care, to study different models of organization of palliative care. Develop students' attitudes about the humane approach to the patient in the last stage of life. The importance of palliative care as the only branch in medicine dealing with the quality of life of dying patients.

Main features of palliative care.  Models for organising palliative care in Croatia and the EU. The role and tasks of a mobile multidisciplinary palliative team. Recognition of the symptoms of patients in the final stages of the disease and ways for taking care of them. Support from the family doctor's team to the palliative patient and his family. Systematic education and the need for research in palliative care. Specific and specialist palliative care.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1.    Explain the philosophy and principles of palliative care, as well as the possibilities of integration into various areas with an impact on the quality of health care at the end of life.
2.    Assess the need for cooperation within team members - recognize the role of the nurse/technician as a team member and manage complex communication.
3.    Argue the importance of communication between patients, families and health professionals, and within the interdisciplinary team itself.
4.    Explain the role of the nurse through different organizational models of palliative care.
5.    Evaluate the assessment in resolving pain in patients in palliative care.
6.    Justify the multiple roles of the nurse in the implementation of quality health care in the last stage of life.
7.    Describe and critically understand the concepts of loss, grief, and support.
