GERONTOLOGICAL HEALTH CARE AND GERONTOLOGY

Introduce students to the scientific basics of gerontology, changes in the body in the older age, specific health needs of elderly patients. 

Introduce students to the principles of providing and evaluating health care in such patients, the role of nurses in health care and organization of nursing care.

Train students for the application of scientific knowledge in solving a specific problem in the organization of health care.

The course includes theoretical and practical application of knowledge focused on gerontology and health care of geriatric patients as a scientific discipline with special emphasis on holistic, systematic and individualized approach during hospital stay and after being discharged from the hospital. Given the chronicity of the disease, the rehabilitation period and the palliation of symptoms, the disease is reflected in the patient's life, his family, community, and therefore, knowledge of community health care and palliative care are included in the content of the course, with special emphasis on education of the patient and his family.

By mastering the content of the course, students will acquire knowledge about ageing and old age as a normal physiological phenomenon, knowledge about pathological ageing, and knowledge about preventing sick ageing by applying primary, secondary and tertiary prevention for the elderly. Acquisition of knowledge about organizational models of geriatric and gerontological care for the elderly in primary health care for the elderly, differences between measures in gerontology centers and measures of the gerontology center.

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. argue factual and theoretical knowledge in gerontological health care and gerontology;

2. recognize pathophysiological changes in geriatric patients;
3. identify needs, plan and participate as a team member in the implementation of health care and the process of diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation;
4. evaluate and think critically about the impact of implemented nursing interventions in gerontological health care;
5. conduct research in gerontological health care;
6. assume responsibility in the implementation of quality gerontological health care in accordance with the principles of nursing, standards and legal regulations.
