The goal of this course is to unveil fundamental knowledge and information that will enable undergraduates of nursing to provide patients with safe and effective health protection when it comes to pharmacology. The aim is to provide undergraduates with the basic knowledge on pharmacology and clinical pharmacology that they need in their everyday work with patients.
Basic teaching units:
General pharmacology (introduction, medication classification, ways of applying medication, terminology)
Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics
Clinical testing of medicine
Side effects and interaction
Legislation in the field of medication
Cooperation with patients and following instructions of medication application
Applying medication on specific patient groups (elderly, children, pregnant women, when kidney or liver function is damaged)
Pharmacology of the autonomous nervous system
Pharmacology of the central nervous system
Anaesthetics, analgesics and anti-inflammatory medication
Medication to treat disorders of heart and blood vessel system
Medication to treat disorders of digestive system
Medication to treat disorders of respiratory system
Antimicrobial chemotherapy agents
Medication to treat disorders of metabolism, hormones and vitamins

After the lectures and seminars, self-study and the passed exam students will be able to:
1. critically appraise pharmacological terms
2. assess the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of the main groups of drugs
3. predict the expected drug actions of the drugs they use in everyday practice, including their side effects and interactions
4. evaluate the proper drug prescribing in everyday practice
5. present the process of drug clinical trials and drug legislative
