HEALTH CARE OF ELDERLY PEOPLE

To familiarize students with specific health needs and principals of giving health care to elderly people. To train the student for implementation of specific nursing care for elderly people.

The content of the course is:

Basics of geriatrics and gerontology. Demographic, biological, and psychological aspects of aging. Physiological and pathological changes in aging process. Primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention for elderly. Help in fulfilmentofbasic human needs. Communication with elderly people. Organisational models in care for elderly people. Views and prejudices about aging and elderly people.  Successful aging and life quality of elderly people.

Practical part of the course (practical lessons) follows themes of theoretical lessons.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1.      explain the basic concepts in the field of geriatrics and gerontology.

2.      analyse the basic features of demographic, biological, psychological, and social aging.

3.      distinguish between physiological and pathological changes in old age.

4.      carry out diagnostic, treatment, and rehabilitation procedures for the elderly independently and as a member of the team.

5.      carry out the nursing care process, health care needs assessment, goal setting, plan development and implementation of procedures, evaluation.

6.      apply prevention measures for the elderly.

7.      compare basic models of care for the elderly.

8.      develop positive attitudes about age and the elderly.
