The objective of the course is to teach students about the physiology of ageing, preventive and therapeutic measures in various domains of dentistry and medicine, which supplement each other in preserving and maintaining good oral and overall health of elderly persons.
General concepts related to health and ageing; ageing and ageing issues; Old age and dental protection – demographics, dental protection (with public financing, self-financing and nursing homes); Role of dentists and oral hygienists in an interdisciplinary team; Biological, physiological, immunological aspects of ageing; Ageing and the alveolar bone, teeth, oral mucosa, salivary glands, periodontium; Oral health in old age and quality of life; Behavioural aspects of ageing – psychological perspectives of ageing, influence of the environment and society, communication between a physician and an elderly person; General medical aspects of ageing – health assessment, nutrition, mental disorders and psychiatric diseases in elderly persons, medications and old age; General diseases in old age; Prevention and health preservation in old age; Primary, secondary and tertiary prevention in old age; Healthcare in old age – hospital geriatrics; Effect of health issues on dental protection; Epidemiology of oral diseases in old age, preventive dental protection; Pathology and treatment of oral mucosa and salivary gland diseases; Pathology and treatment of dental diseases; Prosthetic aspects in the treatment of elderly persons; Possibilities of acceptance of and adaptation to dental implants in elderly persons; Planning a prosthetic treatment of elderly persons; Treating edentulous elderly patients; Treating partially edentulous elderly patients; Making complex dental implants; Making fixed dental implants; Rehabilitation of elderly patients dependent on the care of other persons; Prosthetics on mini implants;
