ORAL MEDICINE

The objective of the course is to educate students for practical work on patients suffering from various diseases of the oral mucosa in terms of detecting, diagnosing and treating oral diseases.

Diagnostic methods in oral medicine: a) clinical methods, b) diagnostic tests, c) laboratory diagnostic methods

Oral infections – non-specific, specific, fungal: clinical presentation, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, therapy

Oral infections – viral: Herpes virus I and II, VZV, HIV, EBV, CoA, clinical presentation, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, therapy

Recurrent oral ulcerations: aetiology, classification, clinical presentation, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, therapy

Diseases of the lips and tongue: aetiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, therapy

Saliva and salivary glands: basic characteristics, salivation disorders, salivary gland disorders, clinical presentation, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, therapy

Lymph nodes of the head and neck, facial swelling: aetiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, therapy

White and red lesions of the oral mucosa: aetiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, therapy

Oral mucosa and systemic diseases Oral manifestations of skin diseases

Pemphigus, Pemphigoid, Lichen planus, Erythema exudativum multiforme

Oral mucosa and systemic diseases: endocrine, blood, immunological, cardiovascular, kidney, psychosomatic disorders and psychiatric diseases

Orofacial pain, neuralgia and temporomandibular joint: chronic orofacial pain, taste disorders, oral symptoms without accompanying physical changes, atypical facial pain, glossodynia and glossopyrosis, subjective xerostomia and idiopathic dysgeusia, aetiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, therapy

Oral manifestations caused by side effects of medications

(antibiotics, corticosteroids, immunosuppressives, cytostatics) and oral manifestations caused by physical, chemical, thermal and radioactive agents: aetiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, therapy

 

PRACTICAL CLASSES

 

Application of precautions for preventing the spread of infection (hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, etc.)

Basic characteristics of a healthy oral mucosa, prevention of oral soft tissue diseases

Signs and symptoms of diseases in oral medicine

Diagnostic methods in oral medicine, medical history

Clinical examination of the oral mucosa and other surrounding structures

Clinical oral tests, clinical laboratory tests, laboratory diagnostic methods

Treatment procedure: outpatient treatment (dental), at-home treatment, treatment of systemic diseases

Treatment procedures:

• elimination of irritation of the oral mucosa

• curettage of the oral mucosa

• removal of crusts, roofs of bullae or necrotic deposits on the oral mucosa

• intralesional and perilesional use of medications

• cauterisation of tissues

• laser use
