MATERIALS IN DENTAL MEDICINE

The objective of the course is to educate dental hygienists about the types of materials in dental medicine, their composition, structure, characteristics and application.

Subject matter of the course roughly covers the following topics: structure, mechanical, physical, chemical and rheological properties of materials used in dentistry, alloys for crowns and bridgework, base of dentures and orthodontic wires, ceramic materials, polymers and polymerisation, artificial resins used in prosthetics, cements, elastic impression materials, plaster, waxes, thermoplastic composite materials, functional impression pastes, investment materials, build-up materials, finishing and polishing materials, surface treatment of dental implants, dentinal wound capping materials and root canal filling materials, conventional dental cavity filling materials, adhesive materials and composite filling materials, materials used in oral and periodontal surgery, concept of biocompatibility, sampling methods, identification of the composition of incorporated build-up materials, chemical stability and allergenicity testing.
