Introduction into dental medicine

Make aware of the most common professional diseases of dental medicine doctors and employment perspectives in this profession as well as manner of lifelong learning as a precondition to attain the right to work. 

Introduction into dental medicine provides answers to questions: what kind of science is dental medicine, what are its origins, what are the foundational characteristics of certain branches of dental medicine and what are its perspectives considering the realistic assessment of overall oral health of the population, forms of systematic dental protection and demand for dental medicine doctors in the Republic of Croatia. Students as new participants of the teaching process have to and need to know the basic facts about the Faculty's history, facts on its organisation and way of operating, and especially, they have to know facts regarding student rights and duties and regarding their active participation in the Faculty’s life as well as in the overall academic community. 

Besides the basic facts on the profession, the course Introduction into dental medicinemakes aware of the most common professional diseases of dental medicine doctors and employment perspectives in this profession as well as manner of lifelong learning as a precondition to attain the right (licence) to work. Especially highlighted is the understanding how to approach and use pieces of information and their educational, scientific and clinical application. It is an obligation to answer not only those questions, but also many other current questions about the profession so that students, during their first encounter with what they chose to do, despite many completely different contents that they acquire at the beginning of the study programme, get the information on what their life and work at the Faculty will look like throughout the six-year study programme of dental medicine.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Acquire knowledge about dental medicine as a science;
  2. Interpret the position of dental medicine and dental hygiene in the health system of the Republic of Croatia;
  3. Critically evaluate diagnostic methods and therapeutic possibilities in dental medicine;
  4. To connect diagnostic with therapeutic procedures in the treatment of anomalies and diseases of hard and soft dental tissues and oral mucosa;
  5. Rank the implementation of primary, secondary and tertiary oral health care;
  6. Valorize oral prophylaxis methods
