Sports Dentistry

Gaining knowledge of the athletic injuries of the dental system. Knowledge of macrotrauma and microtrauma mechanisms. Students will be able to explain the biological basics and benefits of trauma during sports activities. Correct recognition of the effects of microtrauma and macrotrauma on the dental system. Differentiation between injury severity, treatment urgency, diagnostics and therapies on the battleground. Knowledge of the possibilities of therapy of dental injuries and injuries to the stomatognathic system. Remembering ways to preserve teeth and transport knocked teeth until the moment of replantation. Conduct procedures for the treatment of sports injuries on the battlefield and in the clinic. Ability to monitor properly the course of therapy and the treatment of injuries. Knowledge of the protective mechanisms for the occurrence of injuries and the means of their prevention.

Sport and injuries. Macro- and microtrauma – mechanisms. Traumas of the stomatognathic system – diagnostics and treatment. Seriousness of sport injuries to the stomatognathic system. First aid in trauma to the stomatognathic system. Course of therapy and treatment of injuries. Protective mechanisms for the occurrence of injuries and the means of their prevention.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Rank the degrees of soft tissue injuries and the degrees of tooth injuries according to the FDI classification

2. Assess the severity of injuries to the teeth and skeletal system of the mouth and temporomandibular joints

3. Choose the diagnosis and therapy of luxated, intruded and extruded teeth in the office

4. Choose the method and type of protection of the stomatognathic system during sports activities, according to the type of sport

5. Determine the taking of impressions of the upper and lower jaws with a ready-made spoon and the spillage of plaster casts of jaw impressions

6. Determine how to model an intraoral tooth guard in wax on a plaster cast, for making an intraoral mouth guard by injection or thermal polymerization and the deep train method

7. Critically assess the mechanisms of sports injuries of the stomatognathic system and argue ways to prevent them to athletes, sports professionals and parents of athletes
