Gynaecology and obstetrics

Knowing of basic practical approach in whole treatment of women and pregnant women. Students will learn physiology of menstrual cycle and pregnancy, and disorders of menstrual cycle with inflammatory diseases in mothers, benign and malign tumours in mothers, and disturbances in the statics of the pelvic organs. Reproductive health will be partially covered, hormonal treatment and diagnosis and treatment of infertility. Students will get to know physiology of pregnancy, monitoring of health and diseases of pregnant women and the embryo, normal birth process and disorders during the birth and postpartum period. Practical knowledge students will gain during the clinical practices.

Specifics of anatomy and physiology of female genital organs, pregnancy, and birth with special emphasis on pathological processes in that area. Physiology of menstrual cycle, various periods, and hormonal activities. Injuries of female genital organs, inflammation of female genital organs, benign and malign tumours of female genital organs, disturbances in statics, etiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, pathological symptoms, and signs. Diagnostic procedures, type of treatment and interdisciplinary approach in treatment. Physiology of pregnancy, infertility, treatment modes and possibilities of infertility treatment.  Reproductive health: hormonal treatment, contraception. Physiology of pregnancy: normal pregnancy flow and monitoring of pregnancy, compulsory examination in pregnancy, monitoring of embryo development (normal birth and post-partum period). Non-invasive x-rays examinations, clinical comparison of normal and pathological pregnancies. Adjustment of new-born child and premature birth.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Determine the physiological processes of the menstrual cycle, fertilization, pregnancy and childbirth and identify      disorders of the same
  2. Identify the most common symptoms of gynecological diseases and their proper diagnosis and treatment
  3. Assess the condition and intervene in disorders in the newborrn
  4. Judge the legislation in the Republic of Croatia related to abortion and sexual intercourse with a minor
  5. Arguably educate about methods of prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, as well as methods of primary and secondary prevention of malignant diseases of the female reproductive system
  6. Arguably support the role and importance of contraception
