Integrative dental medicine

The aim of the course is to review, improve and expand clinical knowledge and skills; improve diagnostic and therapeutic skills in solving cases in the outpatient clinic of the doctor of dentistry; combine knowledge from different branches and areas of biomedicine for the purpose of a comprehensive approach to the patient and to eliminate the patient's health problem as quickly and easily as possible; master communication skills to promote interdisciplinary cooperation between doctors of dentistry and other health professionals and specialists; integration of all previously acquired preclinical and clinical knowledge of the student with the aim of developing a doctor of dentistry with excellent theoretical knowledge and clinical skills linked in a complementary whole; introduction and explanation of the concepts and application of integrative, alternative and complementary medicine; integrative medicine does not reject conventional medicine and does not accept alternative therapies uncritically; the essence of the integrative approach is not only the concept of treatment, but the broader concept of health promotion and disease prevention.

An introduction to integrative medicine and a holistic approach to healing patients that combines conventional and alternative, science-based treatments. The most common diseases from all fields of medicine (cardiology, neurology, nephrology, gastroenterology,...) and dentistry (gnathology, orthodontics, periodontology,...), their oral manifestations and an integrative approach to their diagnosis and treatment. Presentation of the most common diseases of the oral cavity and systemic diseases with emphasis on their oral manifestations and an integrative, holistic approach to their diagnosis and treatment.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. determine the skills of taking a detailed medical history and physical examination with emphasis on the oral cavity and clinical manifestations of systemic diseases in the oral cavity;

2. select the optimal diagnostic procedures and therapy with regard to the patient's health condition;

3. review the relationship between the patient's oral and systemic health status;

4. self-evalue abilities of diagnostic procedures and treatment;

5. assess the need for interdisciplinary cooperation for the purpose of more thorough and effective diagnosis and therapy of individual patient;

6. argue the importance of an integrative approach as a concept of health promotion and disease prevention.
