Introducing students to the basic characteristics of science, medicine and dental medicine as scientific professions. Acquiring knowledge of basic scientific research settings, types of health research and their implementation.

Scientific research (L2)

(Definition of scientific research. Types of scientific research. Cohort research. Research of couples. Cross-sectional research. Randomised controlled experiment.)

Proposal of own scientific research (S1)

(Formulating hypothesis, objective, purpose. Research plan. Determination of the type of research. Determination of sample size. Workflow. Definition of variables. Choice of statistical tests.)

Data processing (L3)

(Databases. Types of data. Descriptive and analytical statistics. Choice of statistical tests.)

Data display options (S2) 

(Data entry methods. Types of data. Choice of statistical processing procedure. Descriptive and analytical statistics.)

Scientific work (L4)

(Definition of scientific work. Types of scientific works. The particularities of scientific works. Original scientific article. Review article. Case presentation. Structure of a scientific article. The IMRAD format.)

Evidence-based medicine (S3)

(Definition of evidence-based medicine. A hierarchy of evidence in medicine. Searching databases.)

Scientific and research honesty (L5)

(Ethics in scientific research, writing and publishing of scientific research. Rules relating to scientific and research integrity.)

Preparation of a summary of the scientific article and of its own CVs (P1)

(The student makes a selection of the summary structure. Writing a summary of their own research and creating their own CVs.)

Sources of medical information on the Internet. Use of bibliographic resources and their search strategies. (S4)

(Choice of sources of scientific information. Choice of key words. PubMed search. Procedure for storing selected articles.)

(The student is conducting a targeted PubMed search according to selected keywords for the given problem. Storage of selected articles.)

Critical judgement of an article (L6)

(Relevance and originality of the topic, appropriateness of the structure of the survey, suitability of examinees and procedures, accuracy of interpretation of results, appropriateness of conclusions, relevance of literature.)

Discussion on relevant collected journal articles (P3)

(The student critically evaluates selected articles, value of evidence, chooses quotes for introductory knowledge of his own article from selected articles, recognizes the manner of citing an article.)

Data processing and display 1 part P4 (Databases. Statistical processing of data. Results.)

Data processing and display 2 part P5. (The student creates tables and graphs from his own research.)

Discussion on the proposal of own research (How to set up research, potential distortions, debate on shortcomings.)

After passing the exam in this course, the student will be able to:

1. Determine the meaning of scientific research in medicine.

2. Classify different forms of research in medicine (basic, clinical)

3. Formulate a research plan, explain the meaning of group formation, selection of variables.

4. Compare ways of displaying data and measurement scales.

5. Critically evaluate graphical and tabular representations of data.

6. To find medical literature in bibliographic and citation databases and databases with full text

7. Compare the types of scientific articles.

8. Question the notion of scientific research integrity.
